Some types of gentian are used for schnapps distillation as well as extraction of medicaments. A few types are used as ornamental plants. The Latin name comes from the Illyrian King Genthios, who was the first to recognise the healing qualities of gentian.

The chamois is a goat-like cloven-hoofed animal. It has very strong legs and prefers to stay in the upper forest belt but in summer often climbs higher up in the mountains to the most inaccessible areas to find grassy spots between the rocks.

The name deer comes from the Indo-Germanic root *ker, which means „horn" / „antlers". In Celtic mythology the white deer Cernunnos represents an embodiment of the Deer God. Herakles' 3rd task was to catch the Ceryneian hind (Greek mythology).

In the alps, the Alpin Rose is also known as „Thunder Rose", due to the widespread superstition that the flower attracts thunder and lightning. Therefore, it was said to stay neither close to alpine roses during thunderstorms nor have them in your house or alpine hut.

The Carline thistle can be found in Grimm's mythology - the tale is about an angel that orders the Emperor Karl to shoot an arrow in the air. Whichever plant the arrow would hit should be the remedy against the black death - and the arrow pierced the Carline thistle.

The Edelweiss is not only known as medicinal plant. In Tyrol, it is also a symbol of affection and love. A well-known saga tells the story about a young man who risked his life climbing a steep rock face to pick an edelweiss for his sweetheart - as an engagement gift.
